Decatur UCC was founded on Easter Sunday of 1992, when twelve people gathered for worship. The congregation was originally chartered as Christ Covenant MCC, a congregation of Metropolitan Community Churches.

We began meeting in Stone Mountain and created a mission to build nurturing, diverse community; to develop worship and programs that explore faith in light of feminist liberation theologies; to offer meaningful, creative, convergent worship; and to focus outward in service to our community.

In August 1996, we moved to the city of Decatur.

The Rev. Glenna Shepherd served as founding pastor. Under her leadership, our congregation reached a membership of over 300, with over two hundred in weekly attendance. Systems and structures were carefully created, equipping lay leaders and providing for the programmatic and pastoral development of the congregation. We gave birth to another congregation and established ministry partnerships with a number of community organizations.

Rev. Shepherd’s departure in September 2000 was followed by the pastorates of Rev. Renne Shawver and Rev. Tessie Mandeville. In January 2010, we were blessed to have our founding pastor, Rev. Glenna Shepherd, return as our Senior Minister.

On July 1, 2010, we entered the next exciting phase of our ministry as we began the process of affiliation with The United Church of Christ. On November 7, 2010, the congregation unanimously voted to officially become affiliated with the UCC, and on January 9, 2011, we adopted the name Decatur United Church of Christ, opening a new and exciting chapter in the life of the congregation.

In 2013, we made the difficult decision to sell our beautiful building. We then rented the facility at 2495 Lawrenceville Highway, Decatur, in May of 2014. In 2015, Jodi Yarini, formerly our music minister, became our Pastor. Pastor Yarini brings joy, understanding, music and powerful and uplifting messages to the heart and soul.

On May 15th, 2016 we moved to our current location at Clarkston Community center – East Room. Here with a powerful new spiritual energy, our ongoing journey can impact our community with greater power and resources.

We would love for you to visit us and join in the incredible spirit moving through our beloved community!
